From 'mothballed' kitchen to food award in 12 months

A MARAZION pub that just 12 months ago had a "mothballed" kitchen has been awarded a prestigious Gold Level CHEFS award in recognition for its commitment to offering healthy menu options using locally sourced food.

The Fire Engine Inn, in Higher Fore Street, has been given the award by Cornwall Council, which means it will now be able to display the distinctive blue logo which tells customers that it maintains a high degree of food safety and standards and promotes a selection of local foods as well as using healthier cooking methods.

The award was presented to landlord Trevor Austin by the Mayor of Marazion, Bernie Hall, on Friday morning.

Mr Austin said that when he took over the pub a year ago, the kitchen was a "microwave heaven" but now it was serving fresh meals made from locally sourced ingredients.

He said: "When we came the kitchen was closed. It was mothballed and filthy.

"We had to start from nothing. We have got a great team working here with visionary chefs who are looking to provide very good pub food.

"We are meticulous in what we are trying to do here."

Mr Austin said he was over the moon about getting the award and that it recognised the efforts of everybody working there.

The St Austell Brewery pub, which has panoramic views of Mount's Bay, serves up low fat, salt and cholesterol meals.

And it is not just the menu that is healthy; Mr Austin sells fruit and other low-fat bar snacks.

He also offers a range of gluten-free options, catering to the growing number of people who suffer gluten intolerance, and this has been drawing in the crowds.

"We do get a lot of return visitors," said Mr Austin. "We have had people come back from Scilly three or four times just because we do the gluten-free food and the healthy options."

A total of 116 cafés, pubs and restaurants across Cornwall currently have a Cornwall Healthier Eating and Food Safety (CHEFS) Award.
