Work is not to create exchange

FEARS that one of Penzance's most prominent stores could become a needle exchange have been dismissed.

In recent days, perhaps prompted by the sight of workmen refurbishing the empty store, rumours have circulated that the former Cornwall Sports store in Market Place was to be the venue for an exchange.

But Richard Evans, manager of the Penzance Addaction centre, which helps people affected by drug and alcohol problems and has been sited behind the store with an entrance in the Greenmarket car park for several years, said this was not the case.

"We are not going into the store but we are expanding into the space upstairs," he said.

"We will be using the rest of the building, which will give us a lot more room and allow us to offer much better facilities.

"We're very excited about the plans and hope to be in the new space by mid-January."

The refurbishment of the store is being undertaken ahead of a potential new leaseholder moving in.
