ONE of Penzance's longest- established stores is shutting, with the owner blaming the closure on high business rates and out-of-town shopping.

R&J Supplies, in Market Place next to the Co-op, has been selling a wide range of bargain goods in the town for 40 years but Roy Kettle said that he had reluctantly decided to call it a day.

"It's a shame that so many shops in Penzance are empty," he said, "but they're being driven out by rising business rates and free parking at out-of-town shopping centres."

Mr Kettle said that his stores in Hayle and Praa Sands would remain open and the Penzance shop was likely to remain open for several weeks while a half-price sale continues.
