A STAFF member at a St Ives shop helped to catch a thief when he took his photograph after suspecting him of stealing a rucksack.
At Truro Magistrates' Court, Matthew Fuller, 34, of Kenwyn Mews, Truro, pleaded guilty to taking the bag valued at £139.99 from Mountain Warehouse on January 31.
Staff had seen him leave with the bag and challenged him outside, but he walked off, leaving the bag behind on the pavement. It was later found to be cut where the security and price tags had been removed by him with a knife and was not saleable. Fuller was identified from the photograph.
Elliott Moore, for the defence, said Fuller had been released from prison in mid-January, was sleeping rough, and wanted the bag to hold his possessions.
Fuller was curfewed three nights a week for three months and told to pay compensation of £139.99 and £145 costs and surcharge.
