Shop sale gives chance to cash in on knitting boom

THIS knitted For Sale sign is hanging in the window of a Penzance business after its owner decided to hang up her needles and move on.

Julia Hopson says she's leaving Knit Wits in Causewayhead at a time when knitting is enjoying a renaissance.

She has seen turnover increase every year in her past eight years in the shop and she has also built up a successful website and knitting blog.

Julia said: "This is no sleepy yarn shop. We have our long-established customers who have been coming here for years, but the sector that's rapidly growing is the younger market and internet sales.

"We are in a unique position here in Penzance as the traditional quiet knitting period over the summer is one of our busiest with all the holiday-makers."

A popular wave of knitting clubs, the growth of sewing cafés and 'guerrilla' craft nights staged in pubs have helped fuel the interest in knitting.

A quick click on Google reveals more than a dozen knitting groups in Cornwall alone.

Julia added: "Our young customers are amazed at what they can make and the wool has changed too. It's not your grandmother's ball of acrylic yarn, it's a ball of hand-dyed organic natural fibre luxury yarn that can sell for as much as £12 per 100g."

Julia said she felt the time was right for her to move on, with her children leaving home, presenting an opportunity for someone to take advantage of the knitting craze.

Graham Timmins, head of business transfer at Miller Commercial, said: "The hand-knitted sale sign, which is up in the shop window, is working a treat and generating a lot of interest in the shop. We've told Julia in this case we'll waiver the usual sale board fees."

Knit Wits is on the market with Miller Commercial on either a leasehold or freehold basis. Freehold £185,000 + SAV. Leasehold off asking price of £25,000 ingoing premium + SAV and a commencing rental of £9,000 per annum exclusive.
