POUNDLAND in Penzance became the first of its 450 stores across the UK to stock a local newspaper today as it took deliveries of The Cornishman.
After months of discussions between store manager Lesley Haley and Cornishman sales and marketing executive David Pollard, the paper went on sale this morning. By 11am, the weekly newspaper, which retails at £1, was already the shop's second biggest-selling single item of the day.
Ms Haley said that if the newspaper trial proved successful, the group would look at rolling it out in other areas of the country.
She said: "This is the first newspaper in the country to be stocked in Poundland.
"If it proves to be successful, we will pan it out elsewhere.
"As a store we have always been keen to promote local products into the business. We want to be part of the community and we are one of the busiest shops in town."
