A FORMER Mount's Bay schoolboy has won the coveted green beret of the Royal Marine Commandos.

Peter Leaper, 20, from Newmill, has completed the 32-week Royal Marines Commando Course at Lympstone in Devon.

He was issued his green beret at his passing out parade on February 28.

He will now join his first troop with 40 Commando at Taunton.

Son of local artist Tom Leaper and wife Lucy Yuill, Peter has a sister studying fine art at Bristol.

He was educated at Trythall School, Mounts Bay Academy and then Truro College where he completed the FaSc Outdoor Education Course.

A keen local sportsman, Peter was a key player for Penzance Hockey Club's first team in recent seasons and has returned home to play this season whenever Royal Marine training has allowed – most recently turning out the day after his passing out parade.

Peter also plays cricket for Gulval Cricket Club.
