Catherine Olive 'Goldie' Goldstone, Madron

A MADRON woman who helped deliver hundreds of children has died.

Catherine Olive Goldstone (Goldie) was a midwife, district nurse, Queen's Nurse and house visitor and is believed to have welcomed 400 babies into the world.

She was born in Camborne and had a younger brother called George, both of whom were brought up with the Salvation Army.

When aged 5, Goldie went to Roskear Junior School and then to Camborne County School for Girls, gaining her school certificate in 1938.

Goldie left home and went to the Mother's Hospital, run by the Salvation Army, to train as a baby nurse, then on to St Giles' Hospital where she qualified as an SRN in 1945.

During the war the hospital was evacuated to Derbyshire to a Methodist Guild Hotel, Willersley Castle.

After gaining her SRN, Goldie went back to the Mother's Hospital, completed her midwifery training and became a Queen's Nurse as part of the Queen's Institute of District Nurses Service – or as she overheard on a train while two women were discussing confinement 'quick in distress, never sober' nurses.

Goldie moved to Bridgwater as a training midwife and here she met and trained Kathleen Toms, known as Tommy. They didn't meet as friends, because hierarchy wouldn't allow it, but instead Tommy went on cases with Goldie.

In 1948 Goldie saw an advert for district nurses/midwives in Camborne. Goldie's friend wasn't qualified enough so Goldie asked Tommy to go with her.

So began their long relationship, although as Tommy points out, they didn't always agree as both had strong characters.

They stayed in Camborne before moving to Battersea Polytechnic to get their health visitors' certificate. They then returned to Cornwall, to Millbrook, to work.

In 1954 the pair travelled to Australia where Goldie had family and they worked in a hospital at Hobart, Tasmania and trained as midwives.

They came back in 1957 and arrived in Madron to Memorial House.

Goldie started a youth choir and junior youth club.

Goldie's hobbies included knitting and gardening. She loved cooking and they both enjoyed entertaining and keeping an open, welcoming home.

Goldie also loved dusting.

Goldie was very ill about seven years ago with a ruptured aorta and not expected to pull through. But she recovered and came home to be nursed by Tommy.

Goldie hadn't been well for the past two years – she slowly deteriorated and died peacefully on January 13. The staff at Menwinnion Country House Care Home, Lamorna Valley, where she and Tommy lived couldn't have cared more for her. Their love, kindness and care made her passing easier for her and for Tommy.

Goldie had a deep Christian faith. She was an Evangelist and led the nurses' Christian Union with Tommy. She was a practical Christian and took her faith into homes, delivering hundreds of babies, praying with mothers (if they wished) after delivery. She also went into hospitals and homes carol singing.

Her funeral was held at Madron Methodist Church.
