A SCHOOL crossing in Hayle needs better safety measures, says a head teacher who has branded the spot "an accident waiting to happen".

There have been several close calls at the crossing near Bodriggy Academy after cars failed to stop for the lollipop lady and head teacher David May said the school would welcome any measures that would increase road safety there.

"It's a very dangerous part of the road because of the bridge and three roads meeting," said Mr May.

"It's a difficult place for children to cross. We just want to say to people: be careful."

As it lay on a corner, directly after a bridge, Mr May said, drivers were sometimes unaware that a crossing was coming up.

"You wouldn't expect it to be a crossing place; if you come under the bridge it's blind, really," he said. "You can only see it from about 20 yards. You can't see from the crossing what's coming. This is an accident waiting to happen."

Until something was done to improve safety, he said, parents were being encouraged to walk their children to school.

The crossing is busy in the morning and late afternoon, with pupils from Penpol School and Hayle Community School regularly using the route.

John Coombe, Cornwall councillor for Hayle South, said he had been trying to get flashing lights installed at the site to warn drivers.

"We've got to get something sorted there," he said. "It's a very difficult corner, but there's no excuse to drive through past a lollipop lady."

He was awaiting the findings of a feasibility study which would determine if lights would give drivers adequate warning, he said.

You can't blame the crossing for idiotic impatient motorists who are not fit to drive responsibly.
