HAYLE Runners fielded a team of 29 members travelled to Pensilva on Bodmin Moor to take part in the Cornish Marathon, reputed to be one of the toughest road marathons in the UK.

A record 276 runners turned out, and the course record was broken by Justin Thomas of Cornwall AC in 2.40.13 and the ladies' record was broken by Naomi Tier of Cornwall AC in 2.56.24.

The route took competitors along undulating roads past Golitha Falls along moorland roads to Jamaica Inn before returning to Pensilva along the valley of the River Fowey.

The weather was kind to all the competitors as a bright but cool day provided ideal conditions for an endurance race.

Hayle Runners had the largest team at the race and demonstrated their strength in depth by taking second place in the men's team race and third in the women's race.

Jordan Morant had a stunning run to finish fifth overall and third in his under 40 age category. This topped a tremendous season for Jordan, who has become one of Cornwall's most promising young runners.

Jordan was supported in the team race by Scott Abraham, Richard Mayes and Mike Dowrick.

Faye Toms led the Hayle women home and won her 35-39 age category supported by Helen Rule, Andrea Spencer Smith (third in 40-44 year category) and Rachel Bowker.

In addition Ian Goodreid finished just outside the team but won third place in his 50-54 year age category.

The race was the 14th and final race in the Cornish Glass and Glazing Grand Prix series and the result at the Marathon confirmed Hayle Runners' best ever season in the team results, taking second place in both the men's and women's team competition.

Club Captain Craig Tonkin was particularly pleased at the spirit within the club.

He said: "Not only have we had the best results in the history of the club we have also taken the largest team to most grand prix this year, having encouraged our newer runners to give them a try. It has been a great year."

There will be in excess of 500 runners taking part in what is a team event for the clubs, but individuals are also welcome to take part. Registration will take place from 9am.

This year owing to the Falmouth Beach Hotel fire the Princess Pavilions have stepped in and Falmouth Road Runners will be organising the event from there.

The five mile race starts at 10.30am with a fee of £10 for those who enter on the day. For further details visit the Falmouth Road Runners website.
