DISORDER and vandalism incidents marred otherwise good natured new year celebrations on St Mary's.

Island police were called in the early hours to a fancy dress disco at Hugh Town hotel Tregarthen's.

During an altercation, an island man was injured and was taken by ambulance to the island hospital with a broken ankle.

Police were hindered in their inquiries by a lack of co-operation from some bystanders and also received personal verbal abuse.

"I've since had an unreserved apology," said Sergeant Colin Taylor.

A second incident saw damage caused by four youngsters who let off fire powder extinguishers in the quay waiting room which were later dumped into the harbour rendering them useless. Quay CCTV led to positive identifications and police said two mainlanders were given "suitable words of advice" while the other two – both islanders – could face possible criminal damage charges.

A third incident – alcohol-fuelled like the first – related to interior damage to a Church Street parked Skybus passenger minibus admitted by an islander for whom a restorative penalty was given. Witnesses to the hotel incident are being sought.
