A very Cornish wedding: complete with an edible bouquet made of local vegetables

A BRIDE'S bouquet is always meant to look good and smell good – but this bouquet had an added bonus ... it was also good enough to eat.

It was the idea of Louise Reynolds, who owns a veg box scheme called Healthy Boxes, and wanted to walk down the aisle with a bouquet made of fresh vegetables when she tied the knot with husband John at Sancreed Church in October.

She chose food over flowers to pay tribute to her agricultural background, she said, and was also inspired to replace tradition with the "environmentally friendly" alternative because of her love for her business and Cornwall's great culinary and creative offerings.

"I kept it secret but I'm so passionate about my fresh produce business, I think everyone knew I would get my vegetables into the wedding somehow," she said.

"I'm already planning an edible Christmas wreath made out of sprouts."

The businesswoman added the bouquet still looked and smelled great and her whole wedding was centred on a local theme, with the reception held at The Beach restaurant in Sennen and many other west Penwith enterprises involved.

"It was fantastic," she said. "I really wanted to involve vegetables and all things Cornish – both my husband and I were born and bred here. They are great to eat but look closer and you'll see they have some beautiful shapes and colours too," she said.

"I wanted subtle tones taken from the silvers, greens and purples of the surrounding sea, fields and cliff-top heather.

"We used sprouting broccoli, different types of kale, miniature savoy cabbages and globe artichokes. It looked really delicate and pretty."

Unfortunately Mrs Reynolds and her husband did not end up eating the bouquet, as she kept it in admiration and sadly it "started getting a bit smelly".

The food was grown on the farm they share at Trewidden, just outside Penzance, and arranged by local florist Agapanthus.

Mrs Reynolds said they did a great job. Florist Josie Doveston at the shop said it was an exciting commission.

"It was nice to be a bit different," she said. "We like different in here.

"It was brilliant – it all went together really nicely. It goes to show you can make a bouquet out of anything. We'd love to do more, we're up for anything."

Healthy Boxes supplies local ingredients to collection points – called Healthy Hubs – across west Cornwall, which can be at home, school, workplace or club.
