A HOTELIER is warning people to be on their guard after her guests were conned out of cash by a man claiming his car had broken down.
Anner Mace said she had herself been approached twice in Penzance by a man carrying a petrol can who asked her for money because he had run out of fuel.
She said guests at her hotel, which she asked The Cornishman not to name, had also encountered the man in recent weeks, with one parting with £20.
"I want to make local people and tourists aware so they don't fall for it any longer," she said.
Miss Mace's first run-in with the man came around three weeks ago. She told him she didn't have any money and thought nothing more of it but last weekend he approached her again.
"He started the whole spiel of his car breaking down and that he had lost his mobile phone," she said.
"I said he didn't have much luck, as it had happened to him the other week and he just walked off."
After mentioning the incident on Facebook, Miss Mace said other people told a similar story. She said the man was in his early thirties, had an Irish accent and had been spotted along the Promenade, Morrab Road and Alexandra Road.
